POINTS:
The beginning of the book of John starts out with saying that, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God. He was with God in the beginning". So, exactly what does this mean? It means that in the beginning the Word already existed and the Word brought light to the people. The world did not recognize or receive God. But this passage and verse is saying that the Word is basically referring to Jesus. The Word (Jesus) brought light to the people. But there was another man that was sent from God to lay the foundation of mortal man to begin to believe. John was his name. He was the messenger for the light, but not the light himself. When Jesus was born, the Word became flesh; human and walked among us. "He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him". Then John would proclaim that this is the person he had been talking about. "He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me". The only Son.
PROBLEMS:
The problems here is that man did not recognize God. Man did not obey or have a relationship with God, but He still loved them. He desired a relationship with man and sent His son to walk among them.
PARALLELS:
Matthew 3:1; 1John 2:8; 1John 1:2; Colossians 1:16; 1Peter 1:23; Galatians 4:4
PROMISES:
The promises I see in this verse is that if you receive God, you are given the right to become one of God's children.
PERILS:
If one does not receive God and become one of God's Children, then they will not know truth - the Word through which all things were made.
PRECEPTS:
The precept or "command" I find in this passage is to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and only through Him can I be saved. Whoever believes in Jesus Christ as the Son of God will receive everlasting and eternal life.
APPLICATIONS:
I can apply this message in my life today by believing that Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh. Only through Him can I come to the Father. The chasm between me and the Lord has been bridged! When I come to the Father through Jesus, I receive His grace and mercy.
